Its range in recent times was quite large, including most of Sulawesi and several other substantial islands, and it is conceivable that localized populations may persist unmolested in some isolated areas, but its known populations have declined precipitously. The remnant native population most often seen by foreign visitors is in Indonesia’s Komodo National Park. It can also be found in the central hill country of Timor-Leste. The distinctive western subspecies abbotti still persists on tiny, remote Masakambing Island in the Java Sea. In Hong Kong, the large introduced population is readily seen in the vicinity of Hong Kong Park and the nearby Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Garden.
