The emerging consensus is to include all Asian populations within Gray-headed, such that its range stretches from Turkey to China, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra. There is some remaining uncertainty as to whether it is truly separate from Black-backed Swamphen of Borneo, Java, southern Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Bali.
